Tennessee Birding: 30+ Warblers and More!!
Brief Overview of the Trip
Day 1:  Sunday, April 22 - Arrival in Knoxville before 2 PM.
Afternoon/evening birding in the Knoxville area. Good
chance for Brown-headed Nuthatch, Eastern Bluebird and
Pine Warbler. At dusk we will listen for, and hopefully see,
Chuck-will's-widow and Whip-poor-will.

Day 2:  Sharps Ridge: This site is locally known as one of
the best places to see migrating warblers and other
songbirds. A pleasant walk along the paved road could
yield a lot of the target birds the first few hours of the trip!
From here, we'll move on to a couple of other migrant
traps before ending the day at Seven Islands Wildlife
Refuge, which offers a good chance for Bald Eagle,
Northern Bobwhite, Grasshopper Sparrow...and more, for
a quickly growing trip list.

Day 3:  Cross Mountain and Cove Lake State Park for
breeding songbirds. Highlights include Golden-winged,
Prothonotary, Cerulean, Worm-eating and Kentucky
Warblers. Some chance for Swainson's Warbler. We
should find Red-headed Woodpecker and Wood Thrush.
On the return to Knoxville, we'll visit the Songbird Trail
below Norris Dam for more local nesting species, and
maybe additional migrants. The Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery
will be a good place for Palm Warbler and hopefully a few
shorebirds.

Day 4:  Kyker Bottoms and Chota Waterfowl Refuge
offer our best chances to add some waterfowl and
shorebirds to the trip list. Possible, though hard to predict,
are American Bittern, Sora and Bobolink. Dusk offers a
chance to see Chuck-will’s-widow, and maybe an Eastern
Whip-poor-will or American Woodcock. Should hear
Eastern Screech-Owl, and maybe other owls.

Day 5:  Cherohala Skyway:  This route offers excellent
opportunities to see many of the higher elevation breeding
species in the area.

Day 6:  Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge and Great
Smoky Mountain National Park:
Another try at some hot
spots near Knoxville and including Seven Islands NWR.
Then afternoon start at Great Smoky Mountain NP.

Day 7:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park: Full day
of fantastic birding here with chance for Swainson's
Warbler and Henslow's Sparrow and much more.

Day 8:  Departure from Knoxville or Nashville on April 29.

This trip is designed with the western US birder in mind.
We’ll spend a lot of time searching for those species that
rarely, if ever, reach the western states. On this trip, we
should find a good number of nesting warblers and a few
key migrating ones, giving good looks at up to 30 (or
more) species of warblers. Other highlights of this trip
include possibility of Ruffed Grouse, Chuck-will's-widow,
Brown-headed Nuthatch, (newly split) Winter Wren, Wood
Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, four species of vireo and a
number of eastern flycatchers.

Stops include some key birding hot spots, including
Sharps Ridge, Cove Lake State Park, Cross Mountain,
Kyker Bottoms, Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge, Chota
Waterfowl Refuge and Cherohala Skyway. We will also
spend some time in the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park. This trip offers a lot for bird watchers and
wildflower/nature enthusiasts and it will be pleasant spring
birding in Tennessee.
