Birding in Panama
Darién Extension
Day 1: Continued from Other Panama Trips

After dropping off any trip participants not continuing on
the extension, we will spend the afternoon visiting several
other sites around the Panama City area, targeting
species we have not yet seen, or for which better looks
are needed.

Note:  This is the same date as the last date of the main
trip.

Day 2: Bayano Lowlands – Darién

In the early morning, we will depart in a mini-bus from
Panama City, driving along the Pan-American Highway,
stopping for morning birding at the Bayano Lowlands.
Here we begin our search for Darién specialties such as
Rufous-winged Antwren, Black Antshrike, Orange-
crowned Oriole, White-eared Conebill and Green-and-
rufous Kingfisher.  As you scan the edge of  Bayano
Lake, search for Pied Water-Tyrant and Cocoi Heron.
After lunch we’ll continue to Metetí, where we will take a
70 minute boat ride towards the town of Mogué.  This is a
small Emberá village located near the coast of Darién.
On our way to Mogué, we'll explore by boat the Black
Mangroves, looking for Capped Heron and more.  We'll
spend our nights at the village in a traditional hut raised
on stilts above the ground.

Day 3: Darién Lowlands – In search of the Harpy
Eagle

This morning we will begin our search for the Harpy
Eagle.  The emergent trees of the Darién lowland
rainforest are the habitat of this majestic raptor.  The best
way to get looks at the eagle is to find a juvenile on a
nest, with the help of the Emberás.  Soaring Crested
Eagles and Harpy Eagles are often seen around this
area.  Taking only small groups to observe these raptors
on their nests helps to protect this endangered bird
against the threats of the new world.  Other birds we
could find on the way include Golden-headed Manakin,
Blue-crowned Manakin and Great Jacamar.

Day 4: Darién Lowlands

We'll walk several trails around the village in search of
some more Darién specialties, such as Black Oropendola,
Bare-crowned Antbird, Gray-cheeked Nunlet, Red-
rumped Woodpecker and more.  Other typical birds of the
zone are Red-throated Caracara and Laughing Falcon.
This Darien-Mogué area is perfect for those looking to
find South American species not found in the rest of
Central America.  Additional specialty birds of the area
are: Barred Puffbird, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, Dull-
mantled Antbird, Stripe-throated Wren, Moustached
Antwren, Olive-backed Quail-Dove....

Day 5: Darién Lowlands & Departure to Panama City

We'll have some time to learn more about the Emberá
culture and the way they survive in the rainforest before
we take our boat out on the Mogué River.  We'll say
"adiós amigos" to our indigenous friends and continue on
our way back to Metetí and then back to Panama City.

Day 6: Departure from Panama City

Birding will continue around the hotel until it is time for
transfers to Tocumen Airport for flights home.
